Concebida desde la Geografía, y apoyada a la vez en las posibilidades del conocimiento interdisciplinar, esta obra aborda el análisis y la interpretación de las implicaciones territoriales que derivan de la importancia desempeñada por el Patrimonio Cultural como factor de desarrollo y de transformación de las estructuras socio-económicas y espaciales. Se trata así de abrir a la reflexión y al debate una cuestión de especial trascendencia en un momento en el que los bienes patrimoniales, asociados al descubrimiento de las múltiples posibilidades que encierra el legado histórico en las diferentes escalas, aparecen sometidos a estrategias e instrumentos de valorización con resultados ambivalentes, que en esencia definen las contradicciones en que se desenvuelven las intervenciones aplicadas al  tratamiento y gestión de unos elementos esencialmente vulnerables a los impactos que no tengan en cuenta sus características intrínsecas y  la necesidad de su preservación a largo plazo. De ahí la conveniencia  de subrayar la necesidad del rigor en los análisis y evaluaciones, de  plantear el tema desde la perspectiva de la sostenibilidad del desarrollo y de profundizar en las enseñanzas y advertencias que emanan de la experiencia comparada, a fin de que las buenas prácticas y con visión de futuro prevalezcan sobre la actuación lesiva y cortoplacista.

 Conceived from the geographical point of view and based also upon the possibilities of interdisciplinary knowledge, this work deals with the  analysis and interpretation of the territorial implications derived from the important role played by Cultural Heritage as a factor of development and the transformation of socio-economic and spatial structures. It is thus a question of reflection and debate, of special  importance at a moment when heritage assets, associated with the discovery of the many possibilities that lie within the historical legacy on the different scales, appear to be subject to strategies and  instruments of valuation that show ambivalent results. In other words, to define the contradictions involved in the interventions applied to the treatment and management of elements which are essentially vulnerable to the impact of forces that have no regard for  their intrinsic characteristics or the need for their long term conservation. Thus, it becomes convenient to underline the need for rigour in analyses and evaluations, to approach the subject from the perspective of sustainable development and to examine in detail the lessons and warnings that arise from the compared experience. This may  enable good practices and a vision of the future to prevail over short-term, harmful interventions.
